Makeup Book Review: About Face by Scott Barnes
I am always looking to add to my makeup knowledge and when I see a good book that promises to do just that I have to buy it. This book caught my eye whilst I was browsing through my local Chapters Book Store. It promises “amazing transformations using the secrets of the top celebrity makeup artist” Scott Barnes. He has also penned another book called Face to Face but I haven't read that one yet, but I've now pretty much read About Face from cover to cover, so here are my thoughts.
The book is a large paperback with 240 full colour pages and features the beautiful Jennifer Lopez on the cover. Jennifer is also the author of the foreword dedicated to her 15+ year friendship with Scott Barnes whom she believes is “the best makeup artist in the business today.”
After the introduction and a few pages explaining his approach to makeup Scott, a US based artist to the stars, takes us on a journey through many makeup transformations on women of many different ages and ethnicities. You could be forgiven for thinking that all these women are models and film stars, that that is not the case - he just makes them look that way.
Each of the makeovers includes before and after photos as well a brief bio of the model. He also includes excerpts from discussions between the model and himself. I like this aspect of the book as it makes the model seem more real and “normal.” He also includes the model's reaction to her transformation which include hair and wardrobe as well as makeup.
With each 14 of the makeovers you are taken step by step through the process with both detailed instructions and photos. He also includes lots of tips along the way relating specifically to the model concerned, such as how to match brows to red hair, how to find the apples of your cheeks and how to contour your nose. After the instructions he shows us large before and after photos with the model's reaction.
The transformations are broken up by chapters on practical advice such as the different types of makeup brushes to use, addressing problems such as skin redness, facial hair and how to look after you skin to make the perfect makeup canvas.
