My December Boxycharm Has Arrived - First Impressions

My December Boxycharm Has Arrived - First Impressions

I didn't think I would get my Boxycharm in time for Christmas as it has to come from the US to Canada and always gets delayed at customs, but it came Christmas Eve. As usual it is packed with full-size goodies and at first glance looks pretty good. Let's take a look at what I got.

Boxycharm is sent monthly and although it is not tailored to you personally like some monthly beauty boxes, it usually contains five full or deluxe size samples for $21 USD. There are discounts for longer subscriptions durations which bring the monthly amount down, but you can subscribe on a month to month basis too. This is my second box and I received five full-size items and here are my first impressions. All prices are USD.

Pure Cosmetics - Buff Collection Eyeshadow Palette - Value $50.00

This palette contains 12 eyeshadows that are pink shades, with most of them being shimmers and only 3 mattes. They are in a plastic palette case that has a metal exterior which, to be honest, feels cheap. The case is held closed by two plastic end tabs that I can imagine breaking quite easily, although I may be wrong, time will tell. It has a full size mirror in the lid and comes with a double ended brush, which doesn’t feel very soft. I personally rarely use brushes that come with palettes, so this wouldn’t bother me, but may be an issue for some people.

At first glance, this is a very similar colour palette to Urban Decay Naked 3. I have only quickly swatched this palette at the moment, but the colours seem quite pigmented and some are smoother texture than others. Once I have used these a few times I will let you know how they behave and last etc. My first impression is that it is not really worth the $50 it retails at, but I am hoping to be proved wrong!

Model Co - Shimmer Bronzer - Value $24.00

According to Boxycharm this is a “light-reflecting bronzer that brightens and illuminates the complexion, giving the effect of a natural glow with a hint of shimmer.”

I’m not a user of bronzers normally, and if I were I would probably prefer a matte one, but I will give this one a try to see how it works. Initially it looks quite dark for my pale complexion, but it may apply lighter, so I’ll reserve judgement on this one for now.

Purlisse - Pur Eye Adore Serum - Value $65.00

This is what Boxycharm say about this product. “Active ingredients like soy protein and fresh marine plants bring 4x the power against ageing in this intensive eye serum. Works against wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness while still hydrating and lifting.”

I am looking forward to trying out this product. As I am getting older I am always looking for products that will help minimise the rigours of time, so if this works and reduces my wrinkles etc I will be very happy.

OFRA - Metallic Liquid Lipstick - Value $19.90

Wow, and wow again! This is a very dark purple shade of lipstick that I wouldn’t normally expect in a subscription box aimed at the masses! The shade is called Napa Valley and has a doe-footed applicator and boasts that it doesn’t feather.

This shade is way too dark for my pale skin to get away with, so although I will try it out to test its durability, ease of use and feel, it is not something I would leave the house in! I know, I’m boring!

Starlooks - Ultra Longwear Mechanical Lip Pencil - Value $19.50

This is a nude shade of lip liner from a company I haven’t heard of before. When I opened this, the actual pencil part fell out of the tube. I put it back in and the mechanical part still seems to work, but if it keeps falling out then it will definitely go down in my estimation.

It is described as a “full-coverage Lip Liner enhances the shape of your lips and gives them the perfect contour and definition. This creamy, moisturizing formula glides on softly to smooth lips and ensures lipstick stays in place while extending its wear.”

I’ll rest judgment until I have reviewed it properly.

Conclusion

I am not as pleased with this Boxycharm box as I was with the November one which I really liked. The item I am most pleased about receiving is the Purlisse eye serum and I look forward to trying this out and reporting back that I look 20 years younger! I am not initially impressed by the eyeshadow palette or the bronzer but will give them a fair trial. As for the lip liner, that is already starting on a back-foot as it fell apart, but maybe it will redeem itself, who knows.

Now the lipstick really leaves me speechless. I know a good many people will love this, I just feel it is a very bold shade to include in a box that, because it is not personalised has to appeal to the majority and this shade won’t.

One of the items that I could have received this month was butterLONDON - Nail Lacquer. I so wish I had this as I really wanted to try this brand out. Oh well, never mind.

In total my box contents were reportedly worth $178.40, so for a $21 cost, it is well worth it. For me, the value of the eye serum is worth it alone and if I find I like some of the other items more that I suspect I will, I will be very happy.
