Very Best of Algenist Anti-Ageing Skin Care Review - Sephora Beauty Insider Points Gift

I love trying out new skin care products, and whenever I get samples in subscription boxes or the chance to try anything new in stores I jump at it. My skin is very oily, even though it is mature, so I need something to combat both the signs of ageing and oiliness.

It seems that many companies assume that as you get older your skin gets dryer and therefore you don't’ have oiliness issues which means a lot of anti-ageing products I have tried are terrible for my oily skin and make everything so much worse. When I saw that Algenist had a 500 point Beauty Insider anti-aging pack I decided to give it a try in the hope that it might be the answer to my problems. I think you need to use these types of products for several weeks to give them a fair chance, so this box of goodies seemed a logical solution.

The products included were

0.23 oz/ 6.80 mL Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm
0.23 oz/ 6.80 mL Algenist GENIUS Ultimate Anti-Aging Cream
0.27 oz/ 7.98 mL Algenist POWER Advanced Wrinkle Fighter Serum
0.17 oz/ 5 mL Algenist Retinol Firming & Lifting Serum

I guessed before buying, that I would get enough product to try it out for a couple of weeks at least, otherwise you don’t get a good idea of how good or bad the product is. It would seem logical that the company would want you to fall in love with the range and then go on to buy more. However the sample items were very small and lasted different amounts of time.

The four items are for day and nighttime use and you are advised to use the Power Serum after cleansing in the morning followed by the Genius Cream and then the Eye Renewal Balm. Repeat at night but replace the Power serum with the Retinal serum.

Algenist Retinol Firming & Lifting Serum

I found I ran out of the Retinal Serum after about 5 days as this is the smallest sample I received. It is a lightweight cream that applies to the skin smoothly and is absorbed quickly. You only use this product at night as it is supposed to work during the night to make the skin look and feel younger, or something like that. Retinol has to be kept airtight and away from light, so it comes in a small pump action tube. I tried to take the tube apart when it ran out to see if I could get more product, but I failed. I’m positive I could have gotten another day or two from it, but it was not to be.

Algenist GENIUS Ultimate Anti-Aging Cream

This comes is a small round tub and is almost like a mouse in its consistency as it is light and fluffy and dissolves quickly into the skin. This is used in the morning and night and it ran out after 7 days. You need to use a finger, a small spatula or Q-Tip to access the cream, especially as you get to the end of the pot.

Algenist POWER Advanced Wrinkle Fighter Serum

This, like the Retinol, comes in a pump action tube, but you get a lot more product with this one than the Retinol so it lasted a couple of days longer. You only use this one in the morning for daytime use and it sat well under makeup etc.

Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm

This is also in a small tub like the Genius but the consistency is completely different. It is beautifully smooth and silky to touch and you really only have to tap your finger on the product to get enough to go around your eye. It just glides around the eye like a dream. I really loved the feel of this product and if it were cheaper would not hesitate to buy it. My sample lasted over two weeks.

So, did they work?

I really don’t feel I had enough product to give this a fair trial as a week of use for a skin care product just doesn’t cut it. I know these products are expensive, so I understand why Algenist wouldn’t give lots of it away, but at the same time wouldn’t they want you to use enough of it to get good results and therefore want to buy it willingly after?

I did not see any difference as far as anti-ageing qualities are concerned. Although I loved the feel of the eye cream and was able to use this longer I saw no difference in the lines around my eyes. As far as my oiliness in concerned, again there was no difference. It did not make my oiliness any worse, but also it was no better, which is fine had made a difference to my fine lines etc, but it didn’t.  I couldn't possibly justify paying the prices for the full-size products without more convincing results. I would loved to have been able to try all the products for at least a month so that I perhaps could see positive results, but there just wasn’t enough provided.

The full-size products come in the following sizes

0.5 oz/ 15 mL  Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm $80
1 oz/ 30 mL Algenist GENIUS Ultimate Anti-Aging Cream - $105.00 (2 oz is $135)
1 oz/ 30 mL Algenist POWER Advanced Wrinkle Fighter Serum - $132
1 oz/ 30 mL Algenist Retinol Firming & Lifting Serum - $125 (2 oz is $208)

So, in order for me to buy the range, it would cost $442 CND plus tax. There is no way I could possibly afford to do this unless the samples I tried had made me look 20 years younger, then I might be tempted.

Algenist have a number of value and gift sets available which might be a better option, but I’ll give them a miss for now.
